Title: AstroEQ Availability [Currently Unavailable]
Post by: TCWORLD on October 07, 2014, 09:25:51
For those interested, there are currently 7 available.

However, I will be moving to America in a week after which I will not be able to make and sell controllers until the Christmas period.

So if you want one and can wait until Christmas, let me know and you get first dibs on the 7 when I get back.

Regards,
Tom.

Hi All,

I am currently out of the country on a research project, which will last for around two years. I will however be making periodic visits to the UK during which I will be able to offer a limited number of controllers.

The next time I will be back will be for a couple of weeks at Christmas this year, so if you want one, and can wait that long, post a message here (first come first serve).

Regards,
Tom.

Hi Tim,

I should be able to achieve Christmas delivery for UK customers. I get back on the 22nd Dec. and Royal Mail recons that the 23rd is the last day to post for arrival in time for Christmas.

Hi Tom,
I am very happy to discover the AstroEQ project. I own a EQ3 Synscan. I have problems with autoguiding in declination axis (sudden jumps) and I suspect it to be a firmware bug in the motorcontroller. Updating my motorcontroller firmware seems to be impossible. That's why I am considering to replace the motorcontroller with your AstroEQ box.
I already have some experience with soldering and with Arduino. Now I hesitate between the Arduino solution and your custom made controller. What are the advantages of your custom made hardware solution? Is it also an option to purchase the parts from you and to assemble them on my own?
Regards,
Leo

Hi all,

I'm going to be back in the UK for a little longer than I originally thought, so I have ordered PCBs for 10 more controllers along with the 6 that I already had.
I will be back on the 22nd, so I should be able to post the 6 out on the 23rd which means in the UK they should arrive in time for Christmas.

The people who have already put their names down in this thread will get priority on the first batch of 6 that will be posted on the 23rd. The other 10 will be available for posting the first week in January (2015).

Those that want one can go ahead and order through the website.
Those wanting power supplies/cables as well, if you could order sooner rather than later so I know how many power supplies I will need to get and can make sure I have them in time to post out on the 23rd.

Regards,
Tom.

Hi.

I have an old meade portable pier and GEM head (google meade 628, 850 etc).  It has an old clock drive running AC power, and no dec control.  I'd like to update the RA motor and add a dec motor with steppers.  I have the mechanical and machining means to design and fabricate necessary parts (I dont mind sharing the design and CAD files but it would be very specific to my mount), but I need something like the AstroEQ for control.

any units available?  ship to US, California?  not in a rush with it.

I also have a question about adjusting the axis' manually, will it be ok to physically push the motion with the steppers and everything connected.  in other words, is there circuitry in place to protect the boards from back driving the stepper motors.  or not a big deal either way.

Hi,

Currently AstroEQ is unavailable. I am hoping to make a small batch at Easter. If you want one sooner, there is always the option of building a controller around the Arduino Mega. There is a schematic at http://astroeq.co.uk/buildown .

In terms of protecting the board, when AstroEQ is connected to EQMOD the motors are always powered - essentially locked in place when not moving, so it isn't possible to turn them by hand. When unpowered, their probably won't be an issue turning the motors by hand - obviously it depends on the size of the motor how much voltage you can generate by spinning them.

Hi,

Could you also add one more to your Easter batch?  :)  I plan to use it for my Losmandy G11 non-Goto.

I need it shipped to Sydney, Australia. When you are ready to accept orders, please do notify me and I'll make the payment. I don't want to miss this batch ;)

Thank you very much!

Hi.

I would also like to be added to the Easter Batch.

I have a Skywatcher Dual Axis motor drive for EQ5 and I was hoping to add goto via my PC with EQMOD and Starry Night Pro Plus 7.

I am from Brisbane Australia. When they are available could you please contact me and I will make payment a.s.a.p.

Thanks

Right, this is where the interesting task begins. Limited quantity, lots of interest.

So assuming the PCBs arrive on time (should be 1-2 weeks), there will be 13 AstroEQs available for shipment by April 20th.

I am going to be sending e-mails or PMs to those who have already requested one from this batch, starting with the earliest I can find and working forward. Once I know how many of those still want one (and whether there is enough!), I'll post an update here with how many are remaining.

You should get a message from me before this weekend if you are make it into the batch.

Regards,
Tom.

(p.s. if I happen to send you a PM and an e-mail, you probably posted in this thread and contacted me by e-mail. Sorry about that, I've kind of lost track).

Well, I have sent e-mails to all who had enquired (I think everyone, if I have missed you, send me a PM).

Quick Update:

For all those who have placed an order, the latest batch is now built and the parcels are all packaged up read to put in the post tomorrow.

There are a total of 8 AstroEQs that are built up for anyone else who wishes to order one. If all of these sell, the next batch will probably be either June, July or August depending on when I am back in the UK. I didn't actually make it back this Easter, so I called in a favour and got someone back home to help with the final assembly of the current batch.

Hi Tom,

just one quick question before I order.

With a .9 degree stepper using 32 microsteps per full step driving a 360 tooth gear directly, what would the maximum slew speed be?

Aiming for around 600x

Is this possible?

cheers
Gary
Title: Re: AstroEQ Availability [Currently Unavailable]
Post by: TCWORLD on May 01, 2015, 16:14:57
The answer to that depends on your motors and how much load is on them, so is not easy to answer. I can drive a 120mm refractor on an EQ5 at 400x with some rather small NEMA11 steppers with a 2.66:1 gear ratio in between (total ratio of 384:1). So depending on your motors, at least 400x should be achievable I would have thought. But again, I can only speculate.

Spec:
Steppers: NEMA 17, 400 step, 1,5 Amp
Drive disk: D 220 mm, stainless steel
Drive roller: D 6 mm, hardened and coated steel
gear driver roller 1:9

and some extra info from the Pulsar controller;

Total Red: enter 360, the exact value will be calculated by Pulsar2 (my setup calculated 344)
Track current: 950mA
GoTo current: 1200mA
Stop current: 400mA or 950 for guided photography
Motor step R/D: 400

Thanks,

Hi, I'm new here and have read the overwhelmingly positive comments the astroEQ has gotten on some forums and was just checking in to see if you still had plans to release any new units soon.
Also, I checked out you have recommended settings for the CG-4 mount on your website. So I'm assuming it will work with one that has a dual axis motor kit installed (non- GoTo)?

Thanks,
Javier

Title: Re: AstroEQ Availability [Currently Unavailable]
Post by: TCWORLD on May 02, 2016, 14:05:51
Hi,

Just to let you all know that there are now AstroEQs available. There are 13 in this batch (I had a couple of unfinished ones from the last batch hence the funny number ;) ).

Because Farnell put the price of the PSUs up (they are now £30 instead of £15), I am no longer selling them. For that price you can probably get one cheaper locally. I will however continue to sell the RJ11 cables.

All of this batch and all future AstroEQs will have the ST4 port fitted as standard. Furthermore apart from the 3 V4.5's that are still left to sell, the 10 V4.6's have a new connector to provide an external 12V output which can be used for powering low current accessories and also a PWM output with 20mA is current limiting which can be used to drive a polar scope light or RDF.

Hello Tom.

I am ready to place an order for ASTROEQ and will also orders 2 Steppers from Zapp automation.
sy28sth45-0674a from Zapp automation.  I also need to order Pulleys and Belts to go with them.

My Mount is an NEQ3 without motors.
Do you have any recommendation on gears I should use with this mount?

Please let me know if I need to specify anything else when ordering.

Many thanks.

Hi all,

Quick update. I'm back from the states now, so can look at making another batch of AstroEQs. I've ordered the PCBs, which should arrive some point in the coming week. I need to order the components as well though.

I only really get a chance to make the AstroEQs at the weekends, and am busy next weekend, so it will be the second week in November give or take when they become available. I'm aiming to make 20 or so, so they won't all be ready in one weekend.

There are a few people who have already called dibs on some of them. I need to go through and make a list of who has already requested one so they can get the first ones. Once those are all sorted I'll post here to note how many are left.

Kind Regards,
Tom.

Hi Tom,

I'm working on a project to restore our university's observatory (I attached a picture of our mount).  We found your AstroEQ through Google and we think it might be what we need to modernize it.  We were able to get the 1986 controller to run again, but we'd prefer to replace it.  It currently has two 8-phase stepper motors which we are considering replacing with 4-phase motors with 10-1 gearboxes and some modern stepper motor drivers.  The university also has a copy of Starry Night Pro Plus 7, which can control telescopes through ASCOM.  We've been looking for a device like yours to put in between.
Since we're starting fresh, do you have any specific motors/drivers that you would recommend work best with your controller?
And i'm not familiar with international shipping, so about how long would it take to ship an AstroEQ to Idaho (US)?  The semester ends mid December, so we would need it before then.  And if not, could you point me to another viable option?
Thanks,

Dallin Hull

Quick update. Sorry it's taking so long to get this batch ready, making 25 as a batch has taken longer than anticipated as I've only had time last weekend and this weekend to get them made. Currently there are 25 assembled PCBs sat on my desk. I need to put them in cases which I'll do tomorrow, and then they will be ready.

I'll be sending out a e-mails this coming week to those who have mentioned that they are interested in one from this batch. Good news is that they are ready well in advance of Christmas for those who were hoping to get one by then.

Kind Regards,
Tom.

Woop, there are now AstroEQs ready to order.

I have sent out e-mails and private messages to people who have previously contacted me (if you got a duplicated messaged I apologise). If you haven't got an e-mail it means I have probably missed you when going through a mixture of PMs, e-mails, and this thread. If I have missed you, please send me a PM.

I should add that when I sent the messages the first time I somehow managed to say there are "are no AstroEQs available", that was supposed to read "are now AstroEQs available". The moral of the story is proof read ;)

I've sent about 22 messages out, so it is possible that this batch may all go. I will update this thread in a week or so once I have a better idea of how many of those are still wanted so I know how many are currently left.

Kind Regards,

Hi Tom,

Happy new year.  I'm very interested in building your AstroEQ controller and hoping to order the two pre-programmed ICs for DIY. Do you also sell the pcb ready to build? I'm fine with soldering etc. it's been many years since I've etched a pcb.

I'm planning on using with a EQ3-2 with NEMA14 motors, is there anything different with the gearing I should be aware of or will those listed for the EQ5 be ok?

Thanks

Hi,

Currently there are no more left of the last batch.

I'm hoping to do another around Easter, but because of the amount of time it takes to assemble them manually, I am looking at redesigning the board to be compatible with having them professionally assembled - being no longer a student it's difficult to find time to spend several days soldering each batch. I don't have a set timeframe as it will take at least 25 days to get a batch manufactured before which I need to find time to redesign the PCB.

I do have another batch of PCBs on order coming in about 2 weeks so at that point I will have programmed ICs + PCBs available again.

Kind Regards,
Tom.

Hi Tom,

I am wondering if you would consider selling just the pcb.
You see I bought the pre-programmed chips about a year ago thinking that I would etch my own board.
Well, life intruded and I never go around to building anything. Just recently I had time to start in again and looked at your website to see what might be new and I see that now you are selling boards with the chips.
So, let me know if that is an option and if so, what the price + ship here to the US.

Thanks,
Bon

Post by: TCWORLD on April 05, 2017, 18:29:59
Hi,

For the next batch of AstroEQs, I am planning to do a batch of either 25 or 50. I learnt from the last batch that if I am doing more than a handful, the amount of time it takes to manually solder them all is immense, and even with lead-free solder and extractor fan it is probably not good for me in the long term.

As such for this batch I will be getting them assembled professionally. The net result of this is a delay to my Easter estimate. In order to support machine assembly I've had to design a new PCB which is more compatible with automated processes which has meant I've had to make a couple of prototype boards. The final prototype appears to be functional so I have sent the design off to get a quote for assembly.

Best estimate it will be between 25 and 30 working days for manufacture and assembly in order to keep the costs down which factoring in Easter puts us somewhere at the end of May.

I'm sorry to push the estimate back a month, but I hope you can understand the necessity. On the plus side getting 50 made would allow for greater availability between batches.

Kind Regards,
Tom.

Hi TCWORLD, I am very interested in the AstroEQ, in part because I previously constructed a similar board (named Picastro) that is unfortunatel no longer maintained.
This time, I would like to buy it directly to save some time, but before, I wanted to ask a few questions, don't hesitate to point me to some documentation if my questions are too silly:

-I would like to be able to add a hardware sensor to avoid telescope mount collision, and setup automatic routine upon hardware related event, do you think this would be feasible ?
-If I once decide to change for more powerful steppers, is it easy to change the power boards that receive the PWM (for big easy for instance) ?
-I can get a high quality 14V power supply with the right connector, is it ok to feed the AstroEQ card with that (instead of 12V)?
-I would like to buy AstroEQ already built, are there some available ?
-Are the boards tested before they are sent ?

Thank you in advance for your help, and this nice opensource project
Title: Re: AstroEQ Availability [Currently Unavailable]
Post by: TCWORLD on July 06, 2017, 22:34:53
Hi,

Hopefully the following should answer your questions:

- It isn't really possible to add any mount collision sensors - there's no way in the Synta mount protocol to report back to EQMOD of a failure for example, and at the moment there is only 1 spare I/O pin on the MCU. However EQMOD does have extensive software limit capability in that you can program the locations where a mount collision would occur and it will stop the mount if it encroaches those limits (it also redirects any go-to movements to avoid a collision). I could in a future firmware revision make that spare I/O pin into an emergency stop pin (essentially it would be that if anything pulls that I/O pin low would kill the motors) if that feature is needed.
- If you want to use external motor drivers for higher power, AstroEQ should work with any driver that has step and direction signals (ideally also an enable signal, but not critical). The only limitation there is that there will be no simple way of AstroEQ changing the step mode, but with the gear changing disable option in the config utility this is not an issue, you just have to make sure that the drivers are programmed to a microstep mode which matches the value in the config utility.
- AstroEQ should be fine running with 14V - the nominal voltage is 12V, but anything in the range of 10-15V is perfectly acceptable. Just make sure to use a 5.5mm x 2.1mm barrel jack wired for centre positive.
- There are plenty of AstroEQs currently available, and I do check basic functionality of each one before I post them (essentially just a simple motor routine to make sure EQMOD connects and it can drive steppers in all directions).

Kind Regards,
Tom.

For others finding the thread, I'll update it thread when I'm running low, so if there isn't another post from me since this one, it can be assumed they are available.

Bear in mind though that at the moment I am quite busy with work and studies, so I'll likely be slow to respond to messages. I do try to get orders out as soon as possible, but it may take a couple of days before they are posted.

Hi All,

I currently no longer have any AstroEQ's available.

Due to the fact that I'm currently working a full time job as well as studying for a PhD, I have little spare time so I am not planning to make another batch of AstroEQ's in the near future.

I will continue be continuing to sell the pre-programmed MCUs and the PCBs to allow for people to build there own controllers.

It's possible that there may be one or two available depending on whether the couple of people who have already e-mailed choose to buy a controller. I'll post an update if that is the case. For now, please assume there are no more in stock.

Kind Regards,
Tom.

Due to the fact that I'm currently working a full time job as well as studying for a PhD, I have little spare time so I am not planning to make another batch of AstroEQ's in the near future.

Hey Tom,

I wish you the very best for your studies!
You just gave me the reason to solder the board my myself ;-)

I have one question though: you have a very "stylish" housing for the controller. Is it 3D-printed? If yes, would you release the files?

Hi Axel,

The housing isn't 3D printed, it's an off-the-shelf enclosure. The part number is in the BOM for the board.

The only bit that is customised is the end panels. The enclosure is made out of ABS, so quite soft, and with some care it is possible to cut out the required holes in the blank end panels that come with the enclosure. I've been laser cutting clear acrylic end panels for the pre-assembled controllers, but I don't have any left.

Kind Regards,
Tom.

Thanks Tom,

I just ordered a 3D printer from gearbest. There will be a lot of thingies to be printed cause we will do a lot of parts for ATM. When I finished the design for the housing I will publish it on thingyverse and post it here. But this all will take a few months. I just merely can spare the time soldering the AEQ board yet ;-)

Cheers
Axel

Hello Tom. I was curious if you have a guess time frame when you might produce more AstroEQs.   I was going to order one and saw your comment regarding not in the near future.  Depending on how long that might be whether 2-3 months or longer will determine if I wait or build my own.

Thanks
Jack

Any idea when this will be available again.
I have a new very large mount I need to convert to stepper motor drives.
Thanks

Hi there.
Do you have any complete units for sale.
Mine has just met an unfortunate end RIP.
Don't really want to go through building another one.
Thanks Graham

None at the moment I'm afraid.
I don't have any plans to make more at the moment - too busy with studies + work.

For a complete after market solution, check out:

http://astroproservice.com/index.php/product/eqdrive-standard-4-3/

I have two of these.  Not astro eq, but eqmod compatable.  Somewhat different design than astroEQ or Onstep, but works great.  Ive actually gotten the best performance per amp out of EQDrive than anything else.  Can't really say why other than he uses a different kind of driver altogether.  For example, I can drive my harmonic drive mount at 2500x sidereal with this setup, whereas astroEQ and onstep the best was about 350x - 500x.  Same motors and powersupply.

Sorry Tom, just trying to help people out. Delete this post if you don't want discussion of other

Hi Tom, would like to know if the later SMD version is small enough to fit inside/in place of standard HEQ5 heavy duty non goto mount motherboard?
If so what’s your availability of these currently?
I understand your website is down for purchases can we still make it happen?
Thanks

Ash
Are you still around replying to posts Tom?
